It is Mother’s Day weekend; I am here listening to son of Ghana who lives in m house. He is talking to his boys and they are reminiscing on the one liner that their mothers give them. One guy says that he told his mom he misses her since he has not seen her for years and he is even contemplating to going back home so as to visit her, the mom replied with “A beg don’t miss me please, go look for money”. My man shared how when he was coming to America his mom said “My mom told me, ‘If you have problems, don’t call home—call upon the Lord. Nobody here can change Ghana cedis to dollars.’ My own mom is known to ask my brothers if they have another mom out there when they are too busy to answer their phone calls. Ive heard other moms ask their kids why they came second in their class. Is it because the kid who came first in class had two heads. “I brought you into this world and I can take you out” African mom proverb.
Every thing that comes out of their mouth is a mix mix of humor, life lessons, and just a touch of trauma—perfectly coated in love, of course.
Honestly, there’s never a dull moment with an African mom around. One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re questioning your life choices.
It make me reflect what kind of a mom i want to be to Maya. she is the greatest gift i have ever received. i pray i have the wisdom to parent her well and to love her well. That everything that out come out of my mouth should be well thought through and may i never be reckless with my words towards her.
